Invention by Error
Spencer Silver invented Post-its in 1974, but
he invented them by mistake. Spencer Silver
worked in a laboratory. He wanted to make a
really strong adhesive. But nothing worked.
He invented a super-weak adhesive instead.
It was a disaster! Four years later, Spencer
was in church. Arthur Fry, his friend, was
in the church choir. He had pieces of paper

in his book to mark his place. But the papers

fell out onto the church floor. Spencer
noticed and remembered his super-weak adhesive. He made
some markers for Fry. They worked. They didn't fall out,
but they didn't destroy the book either. Spencer's product
worked!
Today, Post-its are one of the most popular
office products.
