El primer condicional se usa para hablar de situaciones posibles o reales, ya sea en el presente, futuro o en general.

¿Cómo se forma?  

Se usa el presente simple en la cláusula condicional (if clause) y futuro simple en la cláusula principal (main clause).

Affirmative / negative:

If + sujeto + present simple, sujeto + will (not) + infinitivo.

ó

Sujeto + will (not)+ infinitivo + if + sujeto + presente simple.

Ejemplos:

• They won't pass the exam if they don't study.
• If they study, they will pass the exam.

Interrogative:

If + sujeto + present simple, will  + sujeto + infinitivo...?

ó

Will + sujeto + infinitivo + if + sujeto + present simple...?

Ejemplos:

• Will they move to Buenos Aires if they sell their house?
• If she wins the race, what will she get?

En la estructura donde la cláusula condicional (la que lleva "if") va primero, siempre se coloca una coma entre ambas cláusulas. Por ejemplo:    

"If he doesn't go to university, his parents will be disappointed."

También se suele usar la expresión unless en la cláusula condicional, que tiene el mismo significado que if...not.

"She won't go to the party unless she feels better."

Además, podemos usar otros verbos modales en lugar de will, como might, may, o can.

"He might come to my birthday party if he's free."
