Sexual reproduction is characterized by the union of genetic material from two different individuals of the same species. The genetic material, in the form of haploid gametes such as eggs and spermatozoa, unites during the process of fertilization to form a diploid zygote. Meiosis, the specialized cell division that gives rise to haploid gametes, is essential for sexual reproduction. Meiosis not only produces haploid gametes but, because it usually involves recombination between homologous chromosomes (Drosophila males are a notable exception), and because chromosomes independently assort from one another, the genetic composition of each gamete produced is unique
