Russian culture is a hybrid generated from own customs of many civilizations that shaped this great multicultural state and the result of its development for several centuries in the Second World War and other wars for territory. It is deeply rooted in the culture of the first Eastern Slavs.
By the 1890s, a new form of art was booming, the Russian Vanguardia. However, it developed within the Soviet regime when the government took control of all artistic activity.
The policy of the USSR regarding culture, was controversial: on the one hand, there was the desire (politically motivated) to create an exclusively "Soviet" people, expressed in the notion of Soviet culture and exemplified by Socialist Realism. On the other hand, there were recurring campaigns for the preservation of national cultures: every ethnicity had their own "large indigenous writers" and folk cultural practices were officially supported.
