Although Mr. Muñoz has lived in Miami for two years, he has made
a poor progress, in learning English, for many reasons. He has lacked
an opportunity, persistence and interest. Since he has to speak
Spanish every day at work, he has little opportunity to use English.
When there is a chance to speak English, he is usually too shy to do
so. He has always been afraid that he will make too many mistakes.
He has begun taking English lessons there times a week at a
Language Institute two years ago, and he has made a good
progress. Since the beginning of this year, however, he has not been
persistent in his studies. Recently, he has made no effort to take
lessons or even to study regularly on his own. Perhaps the principal
reason for making such a slow progress is his lack of interest. Because
he has had no possibility of returning to Miami, he has never felt that
English will be useful to him in the future. All these factors have
contributed to his poor progress in the English Language.
