If you look at it simply, then its really just a matter of him fighting the classic Good vs Evil battle…now if you look a bit farther into it then you'll definitely see more to it…ultimately it is up to you to decide how he is a hero in your eyes, but to me he is a hero because he fights not for the Gods or for himself, but for his family and for the innocent.
