Should schools be powered by solar panels?
It is well known that 90% of the electricity is generated from fossil fuels, which, in turn, release tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Due to this, many eco-friendly ideas have been proposed in the U.N. to diminish their use. Among them, the most attractive one was to install solar panels in schools, which despite having many advantages, it has some drawbacks too.
On the one hand, solar panels are expensive. Hence, schools would have to invest large amounts of money in order to power the whole building from solar cells. Apart from that, solar panels’ efficiency drops during cloudy and rainy days.
On the other one hand, solar energy releases insignificant amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This diminishes the amount of harmful gases and slows down the pace of global warming. Besides, schools will save money in the long-term as electricity bills will be reduced.
In my opinion, shifting our energy source from non-renewable sources to renewable ones in schools is a no brainer. Due to the technology of our time, the best solution we have is to use solar energy, that despite emanating carbon dioxide, its amount is minimal compared to fossil fuels.
