Back in the early 1500s, Spain conquered Mexico. This was not a good thing for the
native people, because they were forced
to work for the Spanish conquerors for
nearly 300 years. On the night of
September 15th. 1810, a priest named
Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla started a
revolution against the Spanish rulers. First,
he rang the bell of his church in Dolores,
Hidalgo. A crowd gathered and he told
them to fight for freedom. The next day, the
rebels declared independence from Spain. Mexico finally defeated Spain in 1821.
