He was born in Piura , on July 27, 1834 , being his parents Don and Dona Maria Manuel Grau Seminario . He became a sailor and fought in the War against Spain ( 1865-1866 ) . In 1876 he was elected deputy by Paita. During the war with Chile ( 1879 ) he commanded the ship " Huascar " and the Peruvian square . On May 21, 1879 , she sank the Chilean ship "Esmeralda" in the battle of Iquique . For several months he bombed the enemy coasts and delayed the landing of the Chilean army on Peruvian soil .
