como se utiliza el "there was" / "there wasn´t

Para empezar "There was" en español sería "había" y "there wasn't" sería lo contrario, "no había" Simplemente las utilizas segun el contexto, por ejemplo:
There was a book on my desk.
There wasn't a book on my desk.

significa habia y no habia se utiliza pra decir por ejemplo ahi había un gato
ahí no había un lápiz
