Drug use can sometimes be an important part of your life. Perhaps this is due to emotional, psychological or social problems that you are experiencing. Some substances create addiction or dependence by losing control over drug use and feeling that you cannot live without it. Drug use can also have serious consequences for the future, both for a young person and an adult, because drugs can alter the way the brain works and cause other serious medical consequences. Drug abuse can keep your child from doing well in school.
Drug addiction is defined as a chronic and recurrent disorder characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use despite its negative consequences. † It is considered a brain disorder because it generates functional changes in the brain circuits involved in reward, stress and self-control. These changes can persist long after the person has stopped using drugs.11
Addiction is very similar to other diseases, such as heart disease. Both disrupt the normal and healthy functioning of a body organ, have serious detrimental effects on health, and are, in many cases, preventable and treatable. Without treatment, they can last a lifetime and cause death.
