warmth of home to an altered state of consciousness, almost sleepwalking, bordering on the supernatural.

For many years, it was the stories of the Englishman M. R. James, medievalist and provost of King's College, which were repeated in the heat of the fire

A good example of this is the classic 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens, which Morris understands as a winter meta-narrative: in it, apart from the famous moral that we all know - selfishness will separate us from what is truly important -, it is narrated with supernatural elements the tragedy of helplessness, the threat of a lonely death, the inevitability of death. For many years, it was the stories of the Englishman MR James, medievalist and provost of King's College, Cambridge, which were repeated in the heat of the fire ... Or on television, when they served as the basis for the series 'A Ghost Story for Christmas' from the BBC. Here we collect some of the most famous and that can serve to remove Telepassion and tell a spooky story to the family.

Lost hearts

Excerpt from 'Lost Hearts', broadcast by the BBC in 1973.

It is September 1811, and little Stephen Elliot, who has just been orphaned, moves with his elderly uncle to Aswarby Hall, a large house in the English countryside. Somewhat surprising, since locals know that Abney is a sullen student of ancient religions who hates human contact. "Is he a good man and will he go to heaven?" Elliot asks the maid, Mrs. Bunch. She tells him that he is the best of all, and explains how many years ago he adopted first a girl, who disappeared without a trace within three weeks, and later, a foreign boy who vanished so quickly that he left his hurdy-gurdy behind.

That same night, Elliot has a peculiar dream. In it, he is looking through the translucent bathroom door at the end of the hall from his bedroom. In the bathtub there is a shrouded figure, with a terrifying smile on his face and his hands over his heart. Suddenly, the figure begins to moan and move. Elliot wakes up and realizes that he is in the middle of the hall, but no one is in the bathroom.

At ten o'clock at night he looks out the window of his room again after hearing screams in the garden. There he sees a boy and a girl with their hands over their heart

When the equinox arrives, his uncle recommends that he close the window, and meets him after dinner, in his study, at eleven o'clock at night, because he wants to explain something important to him. Elliot, in the afternoon, watches his uncle sipping a glass of red wine while reading some files and burning incense from a silver box, but he doesn't dare to go inside. At ten o'clock at night, before the appointment with Abney, he looks out his bedroom window again after hearing strange screams in the garden. There he sees a boy and a girl, both with their hands on their hearts. Scared, he runs to his uncle's room, where he only hears screams and guttural sounds.

Abney is found dead with a wound on his chest that reveals his heart, and local authorities rule that his death is due to the attack of a wild animal that has entered through the bedroom window. However, when Elliot investigates his uncle's papers, he finds out the real reason for his death. Abney firmly believed that he could achieve eternal life by consuming the hearts of three children. To do this, he had to extract them from the victims still alive, burn them and mix them with wine. The first was that of a gypsy girl whose heart had been ripped out in 1792; the second, that of an Italian boy in 1805, whose bodies he had hidden in the mansion. Stephen's heart must be the third in the macabre recipe.
