Background: Stranded on an island

You are on vacation with your best friend in the Caribbean. Today you had the idea to go kayaking. When you are out on the sea, you see an island in the distance and want to go there. On the way you notice that the island is further away than you thought and you need more time than expected, clouds are gathering and the weather is getting more and more restless.

As you approach the island, you see that the beach is full of rocks and the waves push you dangerously close. You try to counter it, but your canoes are dangerously pushed against a rock. You could just jump out of the canoe when it pushes against the rock and shatters into 1000 pieces. When you arrive ashore, you will notice that apart from your clothes, you only have a bath towel, a Swiss Army knife, a lighter and some string with you.

You are thirsty but the island is smaller than expected and you will not find clean water. The sea water doesn't look particularly good either, it's salty, contaminated with mud and if that's not enough, the water has oily traces in it from a shipwreck a week ago.

How can you get the water clean so you don't die of thirst?
