Laika (in Russian Лайка, ‘barker’; Moscow, Soviet Union, 1954 - Sputnik 2, Low Earth Orbit, November 3, 1957) was a Soviet space dog who became the first terrestrial living being to orbit the Earth. It did so on board the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2, on November 3, 1957, a month after the Sputnik 1 satellite. It was also the first animal to die in orbit.
