Culiacán, officially Culiacán Rosales, is a city in northwestern Mexico. It is the capital of and the largest city in Sinaloa and in the Culiacán Municipality. It is the most populous and extensive city in Sinaloa and was founded on September 29, 1531 by the Spanish conquerors Lázaro de Cebreros and Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán under the name of Villa de San Miguel referring to its patron saint Michael the archangel.
The city of Culiacán is well known for its culture, luxuries and celebrations. Its iconic sites include its historic center, Las Riberas park, the flag or better known as dancing fountains and religious temples such as its Basilica Cathedral, the Sanctuary and the Lomita. The modern Tres Ríos district is known for its buildings, squares, hotels, parks, restaurants, schools, etc.
The city is located in a valley on the slopes of the Sierra Madre Occidental at the confluence of the Tamazula and Humaya rivers, where the two join to form the Culiacán River, 55 m above sea level.

La ciudad de Culiacán es conocida por su cultura, lujos y celebraciones. Entre sus sitios emblemáticos destacan su centro histórico, el parque de Las Riberas, la bandera o más conocida como fuentes danzantes y templos religiosos como su Basílica Catedral, el Santuario y la Lomita. El moderno distrito de Tres Ríos es conocido por sus edificios, plazas, hoteles, parques, restaurantes, escuelas, etc.
La ciudad está ubicada en un valle en las faldas de la Sierra Madre Occidental en la confluencia de los ríos Tamazula y Humaya, donde los dos se unen para formar el río Culiacán, a 55 m sobre el nivel del mar.
El primer trazado de la ciudad lo realizó el arquitecto Luis F. Molina.
