Glue is used to hold the pages of a book together. Modern glue is synthetic, but in the past, glue was made differently. Starch, a white substance in potatoes and rice, was included in its ingredients. Because of the starch, old books today, are often found with smalls insects inside them. Why are the insects there? The old glue was eaten by these small insects, and books were sometimes destroyed completely by the insects. Luckily, these small insects were eaten by a bigger insect. It was called the book scorpion. In short, many old books were protected by book scorpions.
