It is a religious festival that is celebrated between May and June of each year, on the slopes of the snowy Ausangate, in the Quispicanchi province, Cusco region. It is one of the largest religious activities in the southern Peruvian highlands and brings together a large number of devotees and pilgrims who come from various towns and cities in Peru and other countries.

On November 27, 2011, Unesco registered the pilgrimage to the sanctuary of the Lord of Qoyllur Riti as a member of the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Seven years earlier, on August 10, 2004, this festival and the Qoyllur Riti sanctuary were declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation by the Ministry of Culture.

The festival is organized by the Brotherhood of the Lord of Qoyllur Riti, which is also in charge of maintaining order during the celebration. Preparations begin on Ascension Day (40 days after the commemoration of Christ's resurrection) with the procession of the Lord of Qoyllur Riti from his chapel in Mawallani to his shrine in Sinakara. On the first Wednesday after Pentecost, a second procession carries a statue of Our Lady of Fatima from the Sinakara shrine to an uphill grotto. These delegations include a large cast of dancers and musicians dressed in four main styles.

Most pilgrims arrive on the so-called “Trinidad Sunday”, which is when the Eucharist goes out in procession through the sanctuary. The next, the Lord of Qoyllur Riti is taken in procession to the Virgin's cave and brought back. On the night of this second day, the dancers' groups take turns dancing in the sanctuary.

At dawn on the third day, ukukus grouped by nations climb the glaciers of Mount Colquepunku to collect crosses placed at the top, they also bring blocks of ice that popular belief attributes to them properties
