we all know it’s impossible to live without your phone, right? So I was surprised when my dad suggested a tech-free family holiday. The holiday itself sounded really exciting, staying in a small hut in the mountains, hiking, boating and climbing every day. But no phones? My sister was definitely not pleased at the thought of no contact with friends for three weeks, but I was curious to know what it would be like, and willing to give it a go.
It was certainly strange to switch off my phone and leave it behind as we left for the airport, knowing I wouldn’t be able to talk to people back home. I must admit I considered hiding it in my backpack, until dad told us that there was no phone signal or internet in the mountains! But once we got there, the scenery was so spectacular in all directions that I soon found I’d forgotten all about home and friends and didn’t miss my phone beeping in my pocket every two minutes.
The days passed amazingly quickly. We took our boats over fast-moving parts of the river (scary, but fun!) and explored steep mountain paths where bears and wild cats had been, although we didn’t see any. We caught fish in the river and cooked them over open fires. We didn’t chat as much as I expected because we were usually busy concentrating on what we were doing. But despite the lack of conversation we all became closer to each other, even me and my sister, who argue all the time at home.
So what was it like coming home? I think my parents secretly hoped that my sister and I might continue tech-free and put all our efforts into improving our school grades. But that wasn’t a realistic idea. I probably spend as much time on my phone now as I did before, but I know when to put it down, and it annoys me if friends use theirs when I’m talking to them. The whole family hangs out together a lot more now and we discuss all kinds of things, which is great. So don’t be scared of being tech-free for a while – there is life beyond the phone!
