cuento de Hansel y Gretel en inglés de 40 renglones

Anónimo: -Isn't this delicious?- said Gretel, with her mouth full.

She had never tasted anything so nice.

-We´ll stay here- Hansel declared, munching a bit of nougat.
Anónimo: They were just about to try a piece of the biscuit door when it quietly swung open.

-Well, well!- said an old woman, peering out with a crafty look. - And haven't you children a sweet tooth? Come in! Come in, you´ve nothing to fear!

Unluckily for Hansel and Gretel, however, the sugar candy cottage belonged to an old witch, her trap for catching unwary victims. The two children had come to a really nasty place.
Anónimo: - You´re nothing but skin and bones!- said the witch, locking Hansel into a cage. -I shall fatten you up and eat you! And your sister can do the housework, and then I'll eat her too.

As luck would have it, the witch had very bad eyesight, an when Gretel smeared butter on her glasses, she could see even less.

-Let me feel your finger!- said the witch to Hansel every day to check if he was getting any fatter.
Anónimo: Now, Gretel had brought her brother a chicken bone, and when the witch went to touch his finger, Hansel held out the bone.

-You´re still much too thin!- she complained -When will you become plump?

One day the witch grew tired of waiting.
Anónimo: -Light the oven - she told Gretel -We're going to have a tasty roasted boy today!

A little later, hungry and impatient, she went on:

-Run and see if the oven is hot enough-

Gretel returned, whimpering:

-I can´t tell if it is hot enough or not- said Gretel

Angrily, the witch screamed at the little girl:

-Useless child! All right, I´ll see for myself-
Anónimo: But when the witch bent down to peer inside the oven and check the heat, Gretel gave her a tremendous push and slammed the oven door shut. Gretel ran to set her brother free and, as they were running out of the house, they discovered amongst the witch's belongings, a huge chocolate egg. Inside lay a casket of gold coins

-The witch is now burnt to a cinder- said Hansel- so we'll take this treasure with us.
Anónimo: They filled a large basket with food and set off into the forest to search for the way home. This time, luck was with them, and on the second day, they saw their father come out of the house towards them, weeping.

-Your stepmother is dead. Come home with me now, my dear children!

The two children hugged the woodcutter.
Anónimo: -Promise you'll never ever desert us again- said Gretel, throwing her arms round her father's neck.

Hansel opened the casket.

-Look, Father! We´re rich now . . . You´ll never have to chop wood again-
Anónimo: And they all lived happily together ever after

Once upon a time a very poor woodcutter lived in a tiny cottage in the forest with his two children, Hansel and Gretel. His second wife often ill-treated the children and was forever nagging the woodcutter. She said the wasn't enough food for all of them, and that he shold abandon his children in the forest.

Finally, one day the woodcutter led Hansel and Gretel away into the forest. But as they went into the depths of the trees, Hansel dropped a little white pebble here and there on the mossy green ground.

At a certain point, the two children found they really were alone. Night fell but the woodcutter did not return. Gretel began to sob bitterly. Hansel too felt scared but he tried to hide his feelings and comfort his sister.

-Don´t cry, trust me! I swear I'll take you home. Now give me your hand!- he said.

But the little boy had forgotten about the hungry birds that lived in the forest. When they saw him, they flew along behind and in no time at all, had eaten all the crumbs. Hansel tried to encourage his sister, but he too shivered when he glimpsed frightening shadows and evil eyes around them in the darkness.

All night the two children huddled together for warmth at the foot of a large tree. When dawn broke, they started to wander about the forest, seeking a path, but all hope soon faded. They were well and truly lost. On they walked and walked, till suddenly they came upon a strange cottage in the middle of a glade.

-This is chocolate!- gasped Hansel as he broke a lump of plaster from the wall.

-And this is icing!- exclaimed Gretel, putting another piece of wall in her mouth.

Starving but delighted, the children began to eat pieces of candy broken off the cottage.

-Isn't this delicious?- said Gretel, with her mouth full.

Once upon a time there was a woodcutter and his wife who lived in the forest in a humble cabin with their two children, Hänsel and Gretel. They worked hard to feed them but they never made enough. One day seeing that they were no longer able to feed them and that the children were starving, the couple sat at the table and bitterly had to make a decision.

- We can not do anything else. We will leave them in the forest in the hope that someone with a good heart and better situation than us can take care of them, said the mother.

The children, who could not sleep from the hunger they had, heard the whole conversation and began to cry as soon as they knew the end that awaited them. Hänsel, the boy, said to his sister:

- Do not worry. I'll find a way to get back home. Trust me.

So the next day the four of them went to the forest, the children stayed by a fire and soon fell asleep. When they woke up there was no sign of their parents and little Gretel began to cry.

- Don't cry Hänsel. I have been leaving pieces of bread all the way. We just have to wait for the moon to rise and we can see the path that will lead us home.

But the Moon came out and there was no sign of the pieces of bread: they had been eaten by pigeons.

So the children were lost in the forest until they were exhausted and could not take another step from the hunger they were. Just then, they came across a dream house made of bread and covered with sponge cake and whose windows were made of sugar. They were so hungry that they immediately began to eat on it. Suddenly the door of the house was opened and an old woman who seemed friendly came out.

- Hello kids, what are you doing here? Are you hungry?

The poor children nodded.

- Come on, go inside and I'll prepare something very tasty for you.

The old woman fed them and offered them a bed to sleep in. But despite her goodness, there was something strange about her.

Early in the morning, she took Hänsel and locked her in the stable while the poor thing kept screaming.

- Here you will stay until you get fat! He said

With very bad manners he woke up his sister and told her to go get water to prepare something to eat, because her brother had to get fat as soon as possible to be able to eat it. Little Gretel realized then that she was not an old woman, but an evil witch.

Days passed and the witch became impatient because she did not see Hänsel get fat, since when he told her to show him a finger to see if he had gained weight, he always deceived her with a small bone, taking advantage of his blindness.

So one day the witch got tired and decided not to wait any longer.

- Gretel, prepare the oven that you are going to knead bread! ordered the girl.

The girl imagined something terrible, and knew that as soon as the witch was confused she would throw her into the oven.

- I don't know how to do it - said the girl

- Silly girl! Get out of the way!

PHänsel and Gretelero when the witch put her head into the oven, the little girl gave her a good push and closed the door. She then ran to the barn to free her brother.

The two little ones hugged each other and cried with joy when they saw that they had come out of this horrible situation alive. They were about to leave when it occurred to them to take a look around the witch's house and what a surprise! They found boxes full of pearls and precious stones, so they lined their pockets and started to go home.

But when they reached the river and saw that there was neither a board nor a small boat to cross them, they believed they would not make it. Luckily a gentle duck passed by and kindly helped them cross the river.

On the other side of the shore, they continued running until they saw their parents' house in the distance, who were very happy when they saw them appear, and even more so, when they saw what they had hidden in their pockets. In that instant they knew that the rest of their days would live happily, the four of them and without experiencing any hardship.
