One day in 1651, the Chief of the Coromoto Indians of the Cospes Tribes, in the company of his wife, was going to a part of the mountain where he had a farmland. Upon reaching a ravine, a most beautiful Lady of incomparable beauty, holding in her arms a radiant and precious child, appears to the two Indians walking on the crystalline waters of the stream. Amazed, they gazed enraptured at the majestic Lady, who smiles lovingly at them and speaks to the Cacique in their language, telling him to: "go out to where the whites were to receive the water on their heads and thus be able to go to heaven." These words were accompanied by so much anointing and persuasive force, that they alienated the heart of the Cacique and prepared him to fulfill the wishes of such a charming Lady. An honest and good Christian Spaniard named Juan Sánchez was traveling to El Tocuyo on an important matter, when at a certain point on the mountain, the chief of the Coromoto Indians met him, telling him that a beautiful woman with a beautiful child singular, it had appeared to him in a ravine giving him the order to go out where the whites lived so that they could pour the water on his head, in order to go to heaven; and added that both he and all of his tribe are determined to please the wishes of such an exalted Lady. After the indicated period of time, the entire tribe left with the Spanish and following Juan Sánchez's instructions, the caravan stopped at the angle formed by the confluence of the Tucupido and Guanaguanare rivers, in some places they designated with the name of Coromoto. Juan Sánchez immediately went to the Villa del Espíritu Santo in Guanaguanare and notified the authorities of everything that had happened. The authorities that governed La Villa, ordered that the Indians stay in Coromoto and named Juan Sánchez their Encomendero, with the task of pointing out the lands for their work and indoctrinating them in the Christian Religion. The self-sacrificing Spaniard carried out his mission with the greatest care, sparing no effort to make their stay in Coromoto comfortable and pleasant. The aborigines built their ranchería there, received distributed lands and happily attended the doctrinal explanation, which with many fruits the good Encomendero gave them, aided in this arduous undertaking by their Lady and two companions. The success was crowning this Apostolic work because, little by little, the Indians received the baptismal waters and regenerated in this purifying bath.
