The beliefs that we have are a very high potency mental material. In the first place, they define the reality in which we live since they constitute the lens through which we see and interpret life, ourselves and others. Imagine that you put on a pair of glasses that change the shapes and colors of things. Now imagine that you lose the awareness that you are wearing glasses and believe without question that what you see is reality. Well, this is what happens with the beliefs that we have.
The reality in which we each live is eminently subjective and depends on our perception, which in turn is delimited by our beliefs. It is said that when the first caravels of Christopher Columbus reached American lands, the indigenous people could not see them although they had them in front of their eyes, they saw the sailors leaving the sea but not the caravels. This was because artifacts like these have never been seen and his brain did not process that information.
