Carl and his wife Ellie. Carl was a shy boy who dreamed of the adventures of a famous explorer. He meets Ellie and they fall in love, the two lead a happy and friendly life together. They pursue a dream, to be able to take a trip to Waterfalls, like the explorers that Carl admires. But before they can do it, Ellie passes away. Carl is saddened by the loss of his beloved and for not having been able to make his long-awaited trip with her.
Carl, appears aged, widowed, lonely and grumpy. They want to force you to vacate your home. Carl starts a fantastic idea, decides to tie up lots of helium balloons to his house. His crazy idea is successful, and just the day they are going to evict him, he manages to blow up his house, thanks to the helium balloons. When the house is lifted off the ground, Carl discovers to his surprise that Russell is in it, a little boy who belongs to the group of intrepid explorers.
After a flight with various setbacks, such as a thunderstorm, they arrive at the coveted Falls of Paradise. There they meet wonderful creatures, a large bird, whom Russell calls Kevin and a dog that can talk thanks to his collar called Dug. A group of dogs lead them to Muntz, the explorer that Carl admired as a child. But they soon discover that Muntz wants to capture Kevin. Carl discovers an album in which his late Ellie thanks him for the adventure that living with him for so many years together has meant and encourages him to live new adventures. So he decides, together with Russell, to save his friend the bird.
Finally Carl and Russell say goodbye to Kevin and return to town.
