Rowley begins his journal by explaining that he started writing on one because his best friend, Greg Heffley, also has one. In the second entry, Rowley shows his diary to Greg, who accuses Rowley of copying it .. Rowley complies, and changes the title of his diary from An Incredibly Friendly Boy's Diary to Greg Heffley's Diary for Greg Heffley's best friend , Rowley Jefferson.
Rowley begins the biography with a chapter titled "Early Life" and moves on to the first time she met Greg in fourth grade. He writes that he likes Greg for "doing fun things", then changes the subject to his first pajama party with Greg Greg telling him that he disturbed an "old graveyard", Rowley believing that his deceased grandfather had returned as a ghost to haunt his cabin, Greg playing a "crazy prank" posing as a thief, and Rowley misheard Greg '
In Rowley's entry on "the moment Greg created a special award just for me", Greg gives Rowley a "good boy award" for cleaning Greg's garage. Greg gives Rowley more rewards for doing his chores, Greg creates a "point system" in place, with Rowley rewarding him for getting 50 points as a laundry basket.
Rowley then writes about "the time I found out that Greg is a lousy study buddy." While studying for a math test with Rowley in the library, Greg tries to create a secret code and cheat on the test. This leads to Greg and Rowley making entire pages of rude drawings with "that's you" notes, and they are kicked out of the library after Rowley chases Greg.
In the next entry, "the time I made the worst mistake of my life," Greg cheats by copying Rowley's entire test. They both get into trouble, and while Greg receives 3 days of detention, Rowley receives a warning. Gets angry after being warned not to cheat. Rowley writes about "the time Greg totally supported me" below, hoping Greg won't get mad at making him look bad. The class gets a new teacher, who is not bothered by the students acting crazy and not doing any work. Everyone, including Rowley, gets a grade of "C". Greg complains that Rowley was the only one doing class work, causing the teacher to raise Rowley's grade to a "B".
Rowley then brings up an anecdote in which he and Greg draw their own superheroes. Rowley has a sleepover at Greg's house, where they sneak off to jump on a trampoline. Greg's parents get angry, his mother divides their room in half. Greg draws an "invisible force field" that "hits" Rowley if he tries to get through it. Greg doesn't want Rowley to use the bathroom so he goes by the window. The pajama party ends with Greg flushing one of Rowley's action figures down the toilet.
Rowley shows Greg his bio, and Greg is angry that he is focusing on both him and Rowley instead of just him. Rowley suggests it could be his biography, but Greg threatens to switch all parts with Rowley. Rowley shifts the focus of the journal to himself. The book ends with Rowley's parents telling him that he should find new friends, and Rowley replies that he can't because Greg takes a lot of his time.
