Bipolar disorder, formerly called manic depression, is a mental illness that causes extreme changes in mood including emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and emotional lows (depression).

Although bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition, you can manage changes in mood and other symptoms by following a treatment plan. In most cases, bipolar disorder is treated with medicine and psychological support (psychotherapy).

There are different types of bipolar disorder and related disorders. These may consist of mania or hypomania and depression. Symptoms can cause unpredictable changes in mood and behavior, resulting in great suffering and significant difficulties in life.

Bipolar I Disorder. You have had at least one manic episode that may be preceded or followed by a hypomanic episode or a major depressive episode. In some cases, mania can cause a disconnect from reality (psychosis).

Bipolar II disorder. You've had at least one major depressive episode and at least one hypomanic episode, but you never had a manic episode.

Cyclothymic disorder You have had for at least two years - or a year for children and adolescents - many periods with symptoms of hypomania and periods with depressive symptoms (although less severe than major depression).

Other types. These include, for example, bipolar disorder and related disorders induced by certain medications or alcoholic beverages, or due to a disease, such as Cushing's disease, multiple sclerosis, or stroke.
