El sistema de cavidad del corazón está dividido en dos partes por el tabique longitudinal (tabique cordis), creando las mitades derecha e izquierda del corazón. Estas cavidades se dividen en partes más separadas por válvulas cardíacas formadas a partir del revestimiento del corazón. Ambas mitades del corazón forman las cámaras y los atrios. De esta manera, surgen las cuatro cuevas del corazón. Las cuevas superiores se llaman aurículas, las inferiores los ventrículos.(ver artículo: Nervio Peroneo).
