Biography

Son of Lieutenant Colonel Juan Manuel Grau Berrío, of Catalan descent, and Luisa Seminario del Castillo, a descendant of old families in the region, Miguel Grau's childhood was spent in Piura and later in the port of Paita, when his father was named customs view.

In 1843, while still a child, little Miguel embarked on a schooner commanded by Ramón Herrera, a great friend of his father, who was making a trip from Paita to Panama. Unfortunately the schooner was shipwrecked and, upon her return home, her mother was no longer willing to consent to new shipments. He entered Nieto's school, in which, according to one of his biographers, Fernando Romero Pintado, "Miguel becomes taciturn. At school he is always distracted, quiet, almost surly. He hangs out on the beach as soon as classes finish and in the Holidays".

He was eleven years old when Dona Luisa, his mother, accepted that he would cross the oceans again. Then he traveled all the seas and for nine years (according to the historian Alberto Tauro del Pino) the young Grau "sails the seas of Asia, Europe and America in various transports and even in whaling ships". Upon returning to Peru (1853) he settled in Lima, where he was a student of the Spanish poet Velarde and studied to enter the Navy.

On March 14, 1854, at the age of nineteen, he became a midshipman and for the first time wore the uniform that would cover his glory. He sailed on the Rímac, Vigilante and Ucayali steamers before being transferred to the Apurímac frigate, where he served with Lizardo Montero, another illustrious Piuran sailor. When he was serving in Apurímac, the commander of this ship supported the revolution of General Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco. After the failure of the movement, and together with other young officers who were part of the crew, Miguel Grau was separated from service (1858) and returned to the merchant marine.
