Did you know that Spain is one of the first countries to promote the conservation of unique natural spaces throughout Europe? The initiative was created in 1916, more than a century ago. It was an idea imported by Pedro Pidal from the US The first park declared was Covadonga Mountain, Picos de Europa.
Today Spain has 15 National Parks, protected areas declared "the best examples of Spanish natural heritage". The last to be declared (2013) was the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park. The objectives of these unique spaces are to preserve their natural value, give citizens the opportunity to enjoy them and allow the scientific community to improve knowledge about them.
