Since its origins, the human species has been characterized by its ability to make tools and artifacts of various kinds. This article is an introduction to the question of the logic of technological development in the history of the West. The central question that the text addresses is this: Does the technique develop by revolutionary path or by evolutionary path? Does it progress through sudden jerky jumps or slow gradual changes? The article consists of three parts. In the first, we review the revolutionary and evolutionary interpretations of the history of technology; Next, we reconstruct the typology that Serres proposes to characterize technological development through a model that overcomes the revolution / evolution dichotomy; In the end, we show how these approaches to the history of technology affect the formulation of theories of technological change.
