Senior student, now what?
After 11 years of studying, you are finally a senior. You will graduate from high school, and finally you can stop studying!
At least for a while, since you're probably weary of teachers, desks, tests, and exams. But this does not end with just
running out the school's exit door. You need to plan carefully about what you need to do next. Better plan your future.
If you want to be a professional in Colombia, like in most countries, you will have to go to university, study hard, and
get a degree. To do that, you need to get a good score on the proof of basic education of the national Government
known as ¨Knowledge, ¨ developed and controlled by the Colombian Institute for the Promotion of Higher Education
(known here by the acronym ICFES). Although the government dictates that adolescents from poor neighborhoods
have free higher education, in fact, the only ones who can enter state universities with free tuition are those who get a
high score on the government test. You need to pay a high fee for any career in private universities.
For example, Los Andes University is one with the highest approval rating of all national universities. It has a wide
range of humanities and science faculties. Los Andes is, of course, a private university, so it may be too expensive for
you. But don't worry, if you want to continue your academic path, there are other options. The National Apprenticeship
Service (SENA) is a public institution, which has a number of technical careers, excellent registration, and comfortable
facilities across the country. It is an institution open to young people. Although it has no admission fee, it is selective,
so you have to pass a virtual and a live test. You can get a certificate in one year, or a diploma in two years in specialties
such as electrical, plumbing, construction, hairdressing, agriculture, mechanics, land management, animal husbandry,
carpentry, art, textiles, and many others.
A final option is to get an apprenticeship with a local or national company. On-the-job training is expected and you get
a salary immediately. But beware, places are limited!
