The celebration of this day dates back to a Christian tradition in which the arrival of the kings to Bethlehem guided by a star to meet the newborn Jesus is remembered. In Colombia, this date is symbolically considered as the end of the Christmas season. The Epiphany, or Day of the Three Kings, is the second holiday of the year after the New Year.

As it is always celebrated on a Monday, families take advantage of the festive bridge to lower the Christmas decorations and keep the manger. For some people it means the end of the vacations and the return to their cities to return to their usual activities and work. For others, the festivities continue, as is the case with those attending the Black and White Carnival or the Riosucio Carnival, which are always held during the Three Kings weekend.

Although the celebration of this day as a commemoration of the Epiphany is not as important as in other countries, there are a large number of traditional events in different parts of Colombia.
