Podemos clasificar los verbos en dos tipos: los verbos normales y los verbos auxiliares.

Los verbos normales pueden dividirse a su vez en verbos regulares y verbos irregulares.

Los verbos regulares forman el pretérito (past tense) y el participio añadiendo la desinencia -ed a la forma básica:

INFINITIVO PASADO PARTICIPIO

To play / jugar played / jugué, jugaba played / jugado

Los verbos irregulares forman el pretérito de manera irregular (de ahí su nombre) y no añadiendo la desinencia '-ed'. No siguen ninguna norma, por lo que debemos aprenderlos de memoria.
