This is one of the greenhouse gases (GHG), which help keep the planet at a habitable temperature, but in large concentrations prevent radiation from escaping into the atmosphere, which ends up causing global warming.

"For example, on May 5 it will be reached at 410.14 ppm. That equates to two watts per square meter of additional irradiation," described Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research based in Germany.

This increase in the concentration of GHG has been taking place since the Industrial Revolution, when fossil fuels began to be used massively as an energy source. In 1750, the carbon dioxide concentration was 280 ppm. When the Mauna Loa Observatory, located in Hawaii (USA), started with its measurements it was 315 ppm in 1958.
