Notice the use of the colon (:) in the following sentences. How are the first and
second halves of each sentence related to one another? In what way are 1 and 2
different from 3 and 4?
We need the following: two boiling fowls, a kilo of potatoes and one large
onion.
2 Only three elements
are lighter than beryllium: hydrogen, helium and lithium.
3 The message was terse and to the point: the police have your description.
4 The whole thing became terribly clear: they had no means of escape.
Notice the use of the semicolon (3) in the following sentences. What are the ways
in which the first half of each sentence is related to the second? Could the
semicolon be replaced by a comma or a full stop? If so, what other change
would be necessary, and would the effect be the same?
s His first book was published in Britain; all his later ones were published in
America.
6 One man went to mow; the others went to sow.
Last year at this time they were sailing round the world; now they are serving
