Past Continuous with When and While

Use the past continuous to describe an action in progress in the past.
I was waiting for the bus.
Use the simple past for an event that interrupts an action in progress.
I was waiting for my friend Paco when the bus passed.
While I was sitting on the bus, I saw my friend Jen.
