Cell differentiation is the process by which cells change from one cell type to another, usually a more specialized one. For this process, the cell goes through a process of morphogenesis, where there are modifications in its gene expression, to acquire the morphology, functions of a specific cell type and different from the rest of the cell types of the organism.1
Any cell that presents a level of power or capacity for differentiation is what is called a stem cell. These can be classified according to their ability to differentiate into totipotent, pluripotent, multipotent and unipotent.
Differentiation occurs multiple times during the development of a multicellular organism, as it changes from a simple zygote to a complex of specialized tissues and organs. It is worth noting that there are adult stem cells, which play important roles in wound repair.
Differentiation drastically alters cell size, shape, membrane potential and metabolic capacity, and signal responsiveness.
