It was created in 1997 to publicize the ways of life of the
ancient population of the Santa Elena Peninsula.
In this site, cultural remains and around 200 human skeletons
were discovered, constituting the largest cemetery in America
at that time.
The museum of "Los Amantes de Sumpa" in Santa Elena is on
the settlement of the Las Vegas culture, a hamlet where the
inhabitants buried their dead in their homes to maintain
communication with them.
The Amantes de Sumpa Site Museum is located in the Santa
Elena canton. The person in charge, Beatriz Lindao, explains
that they receive an average of 4,200 visitors per month and
that the essence of the site is the tomb where the famous skeleton of an embracing couple rests, from which the name
of the site arises.
The museum has
achieved the link
between the
community, its
ancestral past and
the artisan
traditions that are
maintained, such as
working with
textiles with Creole
cotton, shawl straw, metal casting and making wooden tubs
