ABSTRACT
From the second half of the XIX century, Cuenca began to be considered, as many other interior Castilian cities, as a too ecclesiastical and rigid, reactionary and monolithic city. The intention of this article is to show that that was not always so. I will also attempt to prove that in the final years of the XVIII century and in the first decades of the following century, the church in Cuenca was also imbued by both Illustration and Liberalism. It was at the beginning of the XIX century, with the installation in the bishopric of several reactionary or even Carlist prelates, that the image of the diocese became what Baroja and other writers of his generation had already foreseen.

RESUMEN:
A partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, Cuenca empezó a ser considerada, como otras muchas ciudades castellanas de interior, como una ciudad demasiado eclesiástica y rígida, reaccionaria y monolítica. La intención de este artículo es intentar demostrar que eso no fue siempre así, y que en los años finales del siglo XVIII y en las primeras décadas de la centuria siguiente, incluso la propia Iglesia conquense se vio también imbuida tanto por la Ilustración como por el liberalismo. Sería a partir de mediados del XIX, con la instalación en el episcopado de varios prelados que tenían un cierto cariz más reaccionario, incluso carlista, cuando la imagen de la diócesis terminó por convertirse definitivamente en aquello que vieron Pío Baroja y otros escritores de su generación.
