I haven't read the comics so I won't be making any comparisons. My criticism is mostly about the execution of the series. I did enjoy watching the show but there were things I felt were unnecessary or stopped the show for being even better. I have quite a few points and I hope that I am able to word out atleast some of them.

I started this show yesterday and managed to finish it by today. I really got hooked on it. The overall style of the world that was introduced and the concept and the ideas were very intriguing. I'm all in for shows that not only use their own original ideas but at the same time are using the genre tropes like jewels. The aesthetic was also through the roof! (OMG the use of the title on umbrellas and in the book.) Pogo looked also very convincing for a CGI character and he was the one of the main reasons why I had such high hopes for this show.

However, now I feel like UA didn't know what it was supposed to be. Different elements were just thrown into the mix and in my view it became something like Haunting of The Hill House meets The Magicians plus the aesthetic.

Nevertheless after the first episodes I started to feel slightly uneasy. I was expecting this show to unfold in a similar manner the Haunting of The Hill House did, like every episode would give its viewer new information on the past of the characters but would same time support the overall arch of the story. The flashbacks however felt at times forced in and sometimes the information was dropped in bit too late like Allison's memory about using her skill on Vanya. The relationships between the siblings didn't always feel very organic even though I really loved the way Klaus was able to act with any character due to his eccentric nature. Sometimes the scenes and the story dragged a lot. Cha-Cha's and Hazel's attack to the Umbrella Academy felt very unorganic again and often it lacked the feel of urgency. After seeing people being brutally killed and knowing that one of the UA members had died also rather brutally, I came in expecting to see fight scenes that would actually feel grave and purposeful. But Diego and Allison just letting Cha-Cha go just didn't feel like they were actually concerned for the attack.

The last episode was a thing of its own for me. The bowling alley scene felt weird and it also lacked the feel of urgency somehow. Five was unnecessarily brutal to the boy and his mother (I don't know was it supposed to be funny or what) and the gunmen running in was also very strange addition for a last episode. Also these guys just don't know how to shoot which could also be a joke about the trope.

Vanya's transformation looked also bit boring and she ended up looking like more of a goth than next-to-God-human being. CGI didn't look terrible but I personally was wishing something bit more original.

The father's past being revealed felt also very much random and didn't give much to the finale. It teased the viewer with implications of further explanations which won't be given till next season. This is what I do not like in contemporary series.

The series could of been great if it had matching tone and consistency. I think that the series had them both but only in the first episodes
