Many studies support the hypothesis that differences between formal school learning and informal everyday learning give way to different systems of functional learning. Language plays a crucial role in school learning, though often the students verbal schema is not connected with its empirical referents. This gives way to learning out of context a wide range of contents with the tendency of generalizing rules and operations. The intellectual tools needed are different from those used in everyday learning situations which is observational and usually mediated by instruments. It would be of interest to study how these two learning systems interact in the classroom. It seems that the schools knowledge base is in conflict with adults traditional culture.
