(There are two guards in the hall at Queen Isabella’s castle. There are four chairs and a big table,
with dogs lying on the floor. The guards are sitting, eating bread and cheese. They are wearing
pants, jackets, and boots. Someone is at the door. It’s Princess Perdita. She’s wearing a long
dress.)
Guard 1: Who is it?
Perdita: It’s me, Perdita. Open the door!
(The guard opens the door.)
Guard 2: Princess, what is it?
Perdita: Where are my mother and father? My brother is sick.
Guard 1: They’re leaving the castle right now to visit your
uncle. Quick, come with me. Where is the prince now?
Perdita: He’s waiting in the village with the cook’s son.
(The king and queen enter the hall.)
Mom, Dad, bring a doctor quickly.
Queen: What is it, Perdita?
Perdita: It’s William. Get the doctor now, please. He’s sick.
Queen: (To Guard 1) Bring him here immediately!
Guard 1: Yes, Madam. (Exits)
