La edad moderna es el periodo histórico que siguió a la edad media en occidente, comienza según algunos autores tras la toma de Constantinopla por los turcos en 1453 y según otros a partir del descubrimiento de América en 1492.

Abarca desde mediados del siglo XV hasta finales del siglo XVIII, se le suele dividir en temprana edad moderna y segunda edad moderna; periodos que engloban otros periodos histórico-culturales, que tuvieron características particulares que los diferenciaron en ámbitos tales como el pensamiento, el arte y los sistemas de producción.
