The plasma membrane (PM) is composed of a lipid bilayer in which various integral proteins are embedded. Note that many integral proteins and lipid molecules are covalently linked with carbohydrates. Peripheral proteins are non-covalently bound to the cytoplasmic surface of the PM. Specialized cells in higher animal connective tissue called fibroblasts synthesize and secrete extracellular matrix (ECM) glycoproteins. The inner surface of PM is reinforced by the cell cortex, which is made up of a network of microfilaments and other proteins.
