What is body dysmorphic disorder?
Body dysmorphic disorder is a condition that makes people believe that there are parts of their body that are very ugly. People with this disorder spend hours focusing on what they think is wrong with their physical appearance. Many times a day, they do things to notice their physical appearance, correct or fix it, cover it up, or ask others questions about it. They obsess over flaws or blemishes that are unimportant or unnoticed by others.
What are the signs and symptoms of this disorder?
People with this disorder:
They are extremely focused on their physical appearance. It is hard for them to stop thinking about the parts of their body that they dislike. They focus on specific things: like a pimple on their skin, the shape or size of their nose, eyes, lips, ears, or hands.
Their physical appearance alters them. People with this condition are worried, stressed, and anxious about their physical appearance most of the time.
They check or correct their physical appearance. People with body dysmorphic disorder have a strong need to look at their physical appearance over and over again. For example, you notice your physical appearance by frequently looking in the mirror, asking others what you look like, or "correcting" or "fixing" what you dislike many times a day.
They try not to see them. Some people with body dysmorphic disorder feel so bad about their physical appearance that they don't want to be seen. They can stay home, be alone, or wear makeup, hats, or clothing to cover parts of the body that they dislike. Some people with body dysmorphic disorder avoid looking in the mirror because it is too stressful for them.
They have a false image of your physical appearance. People with body dysmorphic disorder do not see their body as it is, or as other people see it. The imperfections that they focus on are minor things, hardly noticeable and may even go unnoticed by others. They are sure that they are ugly, even if it is not true that they are.
How is body dysmorphic disorder diagnosed?
A mental health professional (therapist or psychologist) who understands and has experience with body dysmorphic disorder can diagnose it. Mental health professionals ask questions and listen carefully to the answers to find out if a person has a body dysmorphic disorder or another type of disorder.
