The Globe Theater was a London theater associated with William Shakespeare. It was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's theater company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men, on land owned by Thomas Brend and inherited by his son Nicholas Brend and his grandson Sir Matthew Brend, and was destroyed by fire on June 29, 1613.4 In June 1614 a second Globe Theater was built on the same site, which remained in operation until it was closed by an ordinance issued on September 6, 1642.5

In 1997 a modern reconstruction of the Globe, called Shakespeare's Globe, opened its doors approximately 230 meters from the original theater plot.6 From 1909, the current Gielgud Theater was called the Globe Theater, until it was renamed after John Gielgud in 199.
