Usamos una acción que interrumpió otra acción que estaba ocurriendo.

Como una regla a seguir que casi siempre es asi: Para completar los espacios en las oraciones…
Después de la palabra WHEN (CUANDO), SE UTILIZA PASADO SIMPLE
Después de la palabra WHILE (MIENTRAS), SE UTILIZA PASADO CONTINUO
Y por lo tanto en el espacio que queda libre, usan el otro tiempo verbal. De esta manera usan los dos tiempos verbales en la misma oración.
