El nacimiento del pensamiento abstracto
Una de las características que distingue a los humanos del reino animal es la capacidad de pensamiento abstracto: la habilidad de imaginar cosas que aún no sucedieron o cosas imposibles que nunca sucederán. Esta facultad de pensar de manera abstracta es la base de todas nuestras grandes instituciones sociales, desde la política hasta la economía y la religión.
La primera evidencia antropológica de este gran avance se encontró en 1939, en la remota cueva de Hohlenstein-Stadel (Alemania). Mientras excavaban un sitio del Paleolítico superior habitado hace 40,000 años, los arqueólogos encontraron fragmentos de una efigie de marfil extraordinaria. Este hombre-león, mitad humano y mitad animal, fue la evidencia más antigua de que los seres humanos que lo crearon podían imaginar lo imposible y hasta quizás adorar a criaturas fantásticas. Si esa interpretación es correcta, el origen de todas las grandes religiones del mundo actual se encuentra en esa humilde cueva en el sur de Alemania.

The birth of abstract thought
One of the characteristics that distinguishes humans from the animal kingdom is the ability of abstract thinking: the ability to imagine things that have not yet happened or impossible things that will never happen. This faculty of abstract thinking is the foundation of all our great social institutions, from politics to economics to religion.
The first anthropological evidence of this great advance was found in 1939, in the remote cave of Hohlenstein-Stadel (Germany). While excavating a site from the Upper Palaeolithic inhabited 40,000 years ago, archaeologists found fragments of an extraordinary ivory effigy. This lion-man, half human and half animal, was the oldest evidence of human beings who created imagining the impossible and perhaps even worshiping fantastic creatures. If that interpretation is correct, the origin of all the great religions of the current world is found in that humble cave in southern Germany.
