Miguel Grau was born in Piura in northern Peru, on July 27, 1834. His parents were Manuel and Maria Luisa Grau Seminario. From a young age he worked in the merchant marine and in 1853 joined the Navy. Four year later he participated in the rebellion of Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco against the Liberal Constitution of Ramón Castilla. Being defeated, Miguel Grau returned to work in the merchant navy. During the War against Spain he took part in fighting Abtao (07.02.1866) where the Peruvian-Chilean allies emerged victorious. In 1867 he married the young Lima Cavero Dolores, with whom he had ten children. In 1868, he was given command of the ship Huáscar with which stressed defending the elected president Manuel Pardo in 1872 and defeating the rebel Nicolas de Pierola in 1874. In 1876, he was elected deputy by Paita. In 1879, when the war against Chile, he became the top leader of the Peruvian navy. The May 21, 1879, in the battle of Iquique, Huascar succeeded in sinking his ship to the Chilean ship Esmeralda. Unfortunately, that day our armored Independence crashed and sank while chasing the Covadonga. Under the command of Huáscar, Miguel Grau managed to hold off the powerful Chilean squad for five months made vain efforts to sink or capture. But the October 8, 1879 saw the battle of Angamos where a powerful enemy fleet that surrounded to Huáscar resisted as he could. A Chilean ship cannon Cochrane killed the great "Knight of the Seas". Miguel Grau Seminario, for their personal virtues and his great services to the country, today is considered "El Peruano Millennium".

Miguel María Grau Seminario (Paita, Peru, 27 July 1834 – Punta Angamos, Bolivia, 8 October 1879) is the most renowned Peruviannaval officer and hero of the Naval Battle of Angamos during the War of the Pacific (1879–1884). He was known as el Caballero de los Mares(Spanish for "Knight of the Seas") for his chivalry and is esteemed by both Peruvians and Chileans. He is an iconic figure for the Peruvian Navy, and one of the most famous merchant marine and naval military leaders of America.
