Los antecedentes inmediatos del formato breve, como tal, hay que buscarlos, no obstante, en el largo, más en concreto en la llamada novela gótica (véase literatura de terror gótico), que floreció en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII y primera del XIX, en tierra de nadie entre racionalismo y romanticismo.
