The Eiffel Tower - known as "La Tour Eiffel" in French and nicknamed "La dame de fer" (the iron lady) because of its elegant lady-like proportions - is a tower made out of pig iron located on the Champ de Mars in Paris.

Eiffel teamed up with engineers Émile Nouguier and Maurice Koechlin and architect Stephen Sauvestre for the design of the tower.
The structure is 324 meters high (including the 24m antenna) and was the tallest structure in the world till 1930, then beaten by Chrysler building in New York City. It is believed that 300 workers who put together more than 18,000 pieces of puddled iron built the tower, using 2.5 million rivets to do so!
The tower is purely structural, except for the four decorative grillwork arches added to reassure visitors that the structure is safe. The arches also serve as picturesque frames to nearby architectural spots.
