Kevin Hand wants to find out if there is life in Europa, one of Jupiter's moons. In his research, he travels all around the world to study extremophiles in their different environments. He explored northern Alaska, and he went to the glaciers of Mount Kilimanjaro. He found microbes at the bottom of the ocean. But, of course, he did never sail on the frozen sea of Europa. Did he ever dream of going into outer space? "Sure," says Kevin. "But the reality is that it will probably be another 15 years before a mission can explore Europa." And although Kevin has not visited Europa yet, he and his colleague Robert Carlson built what they call "Europa-in-a-can." They created conditions in their lab that are similar to those under the frozen sea of Europa. This will help them understand how organisms exist in this extreme environment.
